Hydrogen sulfide, or H₂S, is one of the most recognizable causes of sewer odor in wastewater collection systems. Most people know it by the smell: rotten eggs.

For municipalities, that smell can quickly become a public-facing problem. When sewer odor reaches a neighborhood, business district, park, sidewalk, or other populated area, residents and business owners notice, and when it’s strong enough, they call the city. That makes H₂S odor control more than a maintenance issue. It can become a community-relations issue as well.

At the manhole, Rainstopper products can help manage sewer odor in two different ways: contain the odor by trapping sewer gas beneath the manhole cover, or let the gas vent through odor-control media that neutralizes the H₂S odor as it exits.

Containing Sewer Odor at the Manhole

A standard HDPE or stainless steel Rainstopper insert creates a barrier beneath the manhole cover. Although Rainstopper inserts are most commonly used to prevent inflow and infiltration, that same barrier can also trap sewer gas so it doesn’t escape through that particular manhole.

Letting Sewer Gas Vent Without the H₂S Odor

OdorKnocker RX takes a different approach. Instead of trapping the sewer gas, the system allows it to exit the manhole through OdorKnocker media. As the air passes through, hydrogen sulfide chemically reacts with the media and converts into iron pyrite, a stable, non-hazardous compound.

The result is that airflow can continue without the characteristic H₂S odor. The media doesn’t simply absorb or mask the smell. It chemically reacts with the H₂S as the gas passes through, which gives municipalities another option for odor control when venting is the preferred approach.

Often, It Starts With an Odor Complaint

For many municipalities, the first sign of an H₂S problem isn’t a lab result. It’s a phone call:

• A homeowner smells rotten eggs in the neighborhood.
• A business owner notices sewer odor outside a storefront.
• Visitors complain about odor near a park or public space.
